Ello - The Ad-Free Social Network

About a month ago, I read an article about a new social network called Ello. I read that it was basically like a new social networking site, like Facebook and Twitter, but with absolutely no ads. As
the website is still new and getting itself set up properly (it's still in Beta), it's currently invitation only if you want to join the site. Without the invitation, there's not really a lot you can do on there, besides read their Manifesto, which talks about the meaning behind being an ad-free social network.

Ello Manifesto

Your social network is owned by advertisers.
Every post you share, every friend you make, and every link you follow is tracked, recorded, and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold.
We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity, and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership.
We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate — but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life.
You are not a product.

As a person who loves social media and is always up for trying out new apps/websites, I requested an invitation to join and yesterday, after a month of waiting (I actually forgot about it), I finally got an email with my invitation code! I first had a look at the website on my phone, they don't have an app yet but they do say it's coming soon. It's a really nice simple wesbsite, it has a very minimalistic white and black layout and as they say there is no ads anywhere so it's a very nice clean website. It's a little glitchy on the phone still in places, but if you read through the list of current features on the site, they do mention that some of them are buggy so you can see they are working on it. One thing I like about it is that there are 2 tabs on your newsfeed, friends and noise. This is a really cool feature because if there's certain people you're following and don't want to miss a post, you can put them in friends, and then have everyone else in noise so that you can separate the posts you want to read more.

I think in theory, this website has the potential to be very good, especially as soon as they add more features and get it on the App Store so more people see it. That's the only downside to it now, I noticed as soon as i made my profile, I posted a little status and realised that there's nobody I know who can see it and only one person in my Twitter contacts whose also using Ello that I can follow! When they do make an app and officially release it with more features etc and more people start to see it, I think that it could catch on because I think a lot of people will appeal to the fact that it's ad-free. Whether it will be able to be as popular as Facebook or Twitter, I'm not sure but I look forward to finding out! Also, if it does become as popular as Facebook or Twitter..will it be able to remain ad-free?! For now, I'm going to keep my Ello profile and just see what happens in the future!
